There is no way to be the perfect artist (or designer or craftsperson).

Perfectionism is the enemy of art and of craft, both of which require a love of experimentation and a stomach for failure.

Is there a market for this? Or even better, can we create one?

Be what you want to see because you never know who's watching and wants to be that with you.

Never underestimate the power of social media. It allows us to get our context and perspectives out, our voice.

Life doesn't get any easier—you get better.

We had to be more than just party girls, more than just bloggers or mixologists. We had to be more. We realized how important our voice was in the community so dedicated to only share positive press, never posting images for clickbait or for payment.

We wanted to create a setting to be able to tell our point of view and our story. There was no voice for the black female drinker in mainstream media or social media.

What would it look like to think proactively one step ahead? Taking all of the dreams and visions that you have in your head of the future in a blueprint and actually laying them out, and getting a game plan?

Does the vision of the organization you work for match your vision for who you are? Does it allow you to get where you want to go?

Leaders define culture, so if you want to define the culture, you want to be more intentional.

Vision dictates what happens.

Intention is to say, ‘I have a dream, and now I’m going to do something about it.’”

Embrace the rupture.

If we're talking about equity, the big question becomes are you ready to possibly leave the table and not just bring up another chair.

One promising trend that I'm seeing is that we're shifting from a conversation about equality to one about equity, because equality assumes equal access.

No game is worth it if you're not bringing everyone from the bottom up along with you... it's about the larger collective.

What's most important to me?

Intent minus flow implies rigidity.

Intent plus flow equals creativity.

Intent is not a catch phrase. . . . If your intent is to 'fail fast' your intent is not to fail, your intent is to learn.

Resolve and resilience are different. Resolve is being determined to do something. Resilience is, while I'm doing something, I might have hardships and I have to push through those.

“When you first start out as a creative, you think, ‘I have to be original. Everything has to be totally original.’ That’s a bogus idea to start with. The idea is – everything evolves from something else. I like to go to conferences. I like to hear other artists that are doing things that I admired because I could learn from them. I don’t want people to say, “Oh, you’re wonderful” because there is no benefit in that to me. But if I hear people talking about what they’re doing and talking about their own ideas, then that is very stimulating to me. The idea that something is totally original has always been a myth. The more you work – it’s stimulation around you; it’s what other artists do; it’s ideas that are floating in the air that just seem to land here and there. That’s what you’re really looking for and that’s what drives you forward.”
