If empathy is so hard why can't we just be sympathetic and call it a day?

It requires a certain honesty you have to have within yourself. That honesty and vulnerability, that's what brings us together, that's important.

Empathy on the other hand is hard. This means you have to feel something with someone. That means you have to feel sadness and heartache and loss, and disappointment. A sense of failure and loneliness. And that's hard.

It keeps you safe, it let's you think you're doing something without actually having to do something.

Sympathy doesn't require real connection. In fact, it keeps you at a distance- a safe distance.

Get on the ground, yo. Have a conversation. That's the only way you're going to be able to get the information you need. That's the only way that you can make community.

The concept of revolution has nothing to do with anything but yourself. How do you make it sustainable for you. How do you define it for you.

You got to go have a conversation.

That it is okay to be expressive, that it is okay to feel good, that it is okay to feel like how you want to be.

When you see somebody that looks different from you and they raise your eyebrow, put your eyebrow down. Get to know them for them.

Survival is speaking my truth in a world that doesn't take the time to understand my truth.

I've managed never to have a job. So that's my first big achievement.

Where has your time gone? Has it gone toward finding your grind or finding your genius? Or has your time gone consuming and paying attention to other people’s lives or someone else’s genius.

Serendipity has chance and happiness. We get chance every single day the minute that we wake up. Happiness is something that we choose through the chances that we decide to take.

What do you do when you encounter resistance? My advice is listen to the critics and then defy them, dig deep and make it happen.

Accomplishment and achievement are possible if we dare to try, if we allow ourselves to experience life, if we don't play it safe and succumb to fear.

The ideas you have to fight the hardest for are often the ones you’ll be remembered for.

The best way we can move forward as a culture is to harness the power of people to build community.

What do you wake up wanting to change? We so desperately need you. We need your ideas, we need your leadership out there to get us to a better world.

When I get a crusty email, I stop myself for a moment and I'm like, 'What's the most radically generous response?'

We don't reach our potential by being picked on all day. We reach our potential by being lifted up by others around us.

If you were surrounded by radically generous people, how would you act differently? How would you think differently?

We have a model that is for funding and supporting female entrepreneurs. Here's how it works: 500 women, contribute $1100 each—it's an act of radical generosity—that money is pooled together in a fund, and then it's loaned out to five female entrepreneurs at 0% interest. They pay that money back over five years and then it's loaned out again. We're building a billion dollar perpetual fund that we'll pass onto our daughters.

We made all of this up. And we can change it. Everything around you is made up. And we weren't so good at version 1.0; we need to get to the next one.

I look around and think everything is broken, but as an entrepreneur I realize... what a great time to be alive.
