“To be kind is to respond with sensitivity and human warmth to the hopes and needs of others. Even the briefest touch of kindness can lighten a heavy heart. Kindness can change the lives of people.” - Aung San Suu Kyi

May 1st 2015 roboticist Justin Hart steps up to the stage at Creative Mornings Vancouver to share his story on the monthly theme of Robots. He designs robots to understand how humans think and communicate with each other and presents this as a day-to-day creative test. Coming out of his PhD dissertation at Yale, 2014 he is with us sharing the latest in robotics engineering for human development. He notes, “I look for the gaps in our understanding…I look to see how I can fill in these gaps.” He thinks a few steps ahead - “When I’m actually working on a project, I’ll have an idea for a related project, and then put it onto the back burner. By the time we’re celebrating a job well done, I’m thinking, “Okay, so which back burner idea do I get to pursue now?”

Hart is a postdoctoral fellow in the Collaborative Advanced Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CARIS) Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The University of British Columbia. His PhD dissertation in Robot Self-Modeling is based in the processes by which children learn about their sensory and physical capabilities, one of the earliest forms of self-awareness developed during infancy.

Hart states ”…it’s our job is to learn things for everyone’s benefit. The ability of our work to benefit others hinges on our ability to communicate it to others. It’s absolutely imperative that people understand why what you are working on is interesting and important.“ More on Dr. Hart’s work can be found here at justinhart.net. Through daily problem solving Hart notes it is critical to assess the potential approaches to a solution and conduct experiments to investigate a proposed solution. We love the way you think!

Next months speaker Dr. Paul Tinari (they call him the "Renaissance Man”) follows up on the theme of Revolution with a talk on 3D printing. Isn’t this what absolutely everyone is talking about but is also… so curious about? Visit Creative Mornings Vancouver to enter the lottery ticket draw that goes live May 22nd! Tinari takes the stage Friday June 5th at SFU Woodward’s Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.

Creative Mornings is a breakfast lecture series for the creative community, and heck, you should be here to catch up with us one Friday a month. *Psst* it’s free. Coffee included with big shout outs to Bean Around The World for the supply and continual support.

“Everybody is special. Everybody. Everybody is a hero, a lover, a fool, a villain. Everybody. Everybody has their story to tell.” - Alan Moore, V for Vendetta
“As humans, our greatness is not so much in being able to remake the world, as in being able to remake ourselves.” - Mahatma Ghandi
“Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning.” - Mahatma Gandhi
“Don’t worry about failures, worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try.” - Jack Canfield
“Victory is reserved for those who are willing to pay it’s price.” - Sun Tzu
“It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.” - Sun Tzu “Art of War”
“Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.” - Frida Kahlo
