The Story of Emporium Pies
About the speaker
Megan Wilkes has BFA in Interior Design and a MFA in International Business. She worked as an interior designer and project manager for a design build firm after graduating and passed her licensing exams in 2011. After 5 years in the field of design and construction management, Megan decided to pursue a dream of working the hospitality industry. Alongside her business partner, Mary Sparks, she opened up Emporium Pies in the Bishop Arts District in Oak Cliff. Since its opening, Emporium has grown to 75 employees, two storefronts (with a third on the way) and a thriving business that includes wholesale and nationwide shipping. Megan loves to learn and has continued to allow herself to be a student of many teachers including friends, acquaintances, employees, Karma and yes, even Yelp reviewers. She is passionate about hospitality, wine and chicken nuggets. Megan lives with her husband Paul, daughter Grey, and 3 puppies in the Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas.
Megan will be speaking about the proportionate risk and reward of starting a business. What it is like mentally and emotionally to take on risk for your business? How can you mitigate and hedge those risks?
