About the speaker

Lolita Hernandez’s sensory style of writing interweaves Detroit culture, industrial themes and Trinidad & Tobago and St. Vincent heritage to create an emersion into a unique place in our landscape. Her poetry has been featured in several anthologies including Abandon Automobile: Detroit City Poetry 2001 and her book, Autopsy of an Engine and Other Stories from the Cadillac Plant has won a PEN Beyond Margins Award. A 2012 Kresge Arts in Detroit Literary Arts Fellow, she teaches in the Creative Writing Department of the University of Michigan Residential College.
