On starting and running the community-focused co-working space The Sustainable Studios.

Julia and Sara talk about their life journey and the influences that made them the pioneers they have become today. They discuss how taking risks and failing over and over again has helped them to create what is now The Sustainable Studios and how they aim to help and support the creative community in Wales through their work.

About the speaker

Sisters Sarah Valentin and Julia Harris opened The Sustainable Studio in July 2016 through blood, sweat, tears and lots of help from family and friends.

TSS is a creative co-working space to gather, learn, share skills, exchange ideas and knowledge, network, and collaborate on projects not just for business but for the benefit of the wider community.

Sarah is a fashion designer and has worked in the industry for more than 15 years. Julia is a songwriter and musician and together they run DATI, a sustainable clothing brand.

Their first upcycling fashion label ‘Zolibeau’ was started in 2011 on a table under Sarah’s stairs. They sold at local markets in south Wales and showed their clothing at national sustainable fashion shows.

Sarah and Julia also began to run workshops focusing on clothing reuse and upcycling and teaching basic sewing skills with charities Barnardo’s, The Prince’s Trust and BAWSO, MENFA and others.

They have mentored many local people in the creative industries and supported their journey by hosting internships and placements.

TSS expanded in April 2017 thanks to a successful Crowdfunder campaign and now spans over three floors with over 40 members and an events, exhibition and community space.
