Is the artist outside of society or embedded within it?
Join artist Jared Packard as he reflects on the function of artists and curators in society with an eye towards activism – all through the lens of some of his curatorial projects.
About the speaker
Artist Jared Packard is one of Omaha’s most visionary curators and exhibitions managers. He is currently serving as the Exhibitions Manager at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art.
Jared loves working closely with exhibiting artists and helping them realize their visions by coordinating logistics and the display of all Bemis’ exhibitions. Also a painter working in abstraction, he is inspired by the thoughtfulness and the do-it-yourself spirit of the Omaha community.
Jared completed his BA at Clark University and his MFA at School of the Art Institute of Chicago. When not working at Bemis or painting, he is most likely cooking a mean curry.

I like to think of the artist as kind of like a raw, exposed nerve that feels things more acutely, and sees things more intensely than maybe the rest of us and can function as a cultural watchdog that can be barking before the rest of us, caught up with our day to day lives, even though something is happening.
