Fabric artist Heidi Parkes takes perfectionism to the mattresses
About the speaker
Steve Kodis was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin. In 2005 he moved to Milwaukee to study design at the University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee. Since 2009, he has worked as a graphic designer/art director. He believes challenging convention by asking “why” is the way to inform better work. Understanding a problem from the inside out will inform a solution that works from the outside in. His recent interest in vexillology (the study and history of flags) has lead him to start an initiative that intends to help the City of Milwaukee redesign and adopt a great flag.
Heidi Parkes is a new resident of Milwaukee, but her family’s roots in Milwaukee run deep. A graduate from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, she is an artist in many mediums, a yoga therapist, and an experienced art educator. Creating quilts that function artistically as paintings or collage; Parkes adds layers of meaning to her work with printed fabrics and found textiles. When composing these elements into a quilt she relies on improvisation and the Japanese aesthetic of Wabi-sabi, embracing the mistake, the ephemeral, the humorous, and the imperfect beauty of the world that surrounds her.
