As a cartoonist, even though I am drawing in silence, my world is filled with noise. It’s all this noise coming in through the media – TV news, radio news, Internet video pop-ups. It can all be very helpful, but it’s also very, very distracting.

Get ultra clear on your priorities.

Determine your One Goal, and say ‘no’ to virtually everything else.

Your most reliable creative time comes about when you set up guardrails – in advance.

We have have this urgent need for rest, for silence, in a world that is so cacophonous, so noisy, that in order to just keep ourselves together, we need that peace.

Everything costs something.

The best thing that ever happened for me as an artist is when I became comfortable being uncomfortable.

Identify those things that take you away from being present. Make an active effort to put that away, to reduce it. It is really hard!

Make a list: Before I die, I want to ______. Consider how you will get over your fear, inconsistency, and impatience.

If you're finding yourself being impatient, it's a good time to reassess what's working and what's not. Experiment. Start over. Don't wait for stuff to happen because you'll be waiting forever.

Talk to people. Tell people what you're doing and what you want to do. Try to be consistent.

Find one thing you can do every single day for a year. At the end of that time, you'll have so many pieces of work that you didn't have before.

The fear of not trying to make it in San Francisco was greater than the fear of leaving the safety of Minneapolis.

You do not have to become fearless to kill fear. You have to find something you're more afraid of and use that to leverage getting over the other fear.

The first thing you have to conquer is fear.

Any success I've had has not been alone—it's been with the help of everybody who's ever believed in me, hired me, or collaborated with me. Remember that when you are building something or trying to start over.
