It was the culture of New York that inspired the idea behind Refinery29.

We shake it out because play creates trust. We shake it out because it gets us out of our heads and into our bodies. We shake it out because it levels the playing field.

Failure, whether perceived or real, is an opportunity to be uncomfortable and to rebuild.

'You don't have what it takes. What's your Plan B?' I would hear this all the time. And mind you, at Hopkins, I was the only person of color on any floor in an entire building that wasn't there to clean a toilet.

I was always put in a box as "I'm an artist. You're an artist. You have to do this. You have to do that." I didn't want to be that. I didn't want to be an artist. Most artists find a medium and they stick with it. I'm all over the map with my mediums. I wanted to find a way to have multiple mediums but also create a business out of it.

Design, code and technology. I think technology is really where 'beyond' is most important.

We just made it work. We made stuff happen that most people generally wouldn't even attempt.

I think of the creativity this way: we are all humans, every one of us, is a raw bundle of creative energy, just bursting with creativity, the way we use our toothbrush and the way we put our clothes away and the way we figure out our schedules and all of that. Where design comes into the picture is in this structured way that we can manage that creativity.

If you are not looking for anything in particular, you may find something unexpected.

Good stuff happens to people who are well prepared.

We all know that it is better to fix things than buy new things.

That's serendipity to me. I had to go out and do something that I didn't want to do with one artist, which then turned into something completely different.

Things shouldn't be surprising because we should always expect change.

The brokenness reveals a part of functionality.

To say “it’s broken” implies it only ever had a single purpose.

If we only focus on the moment that the glass smashed, we forget everything else that led up to that moment and everything else that comes afterwards.

The moment which the glass breaks reveals what was always there. It reveals the continuity.

Context is always equal to or greater than the instance in which something happens. Saying “it’s broken” only focuses on the one instance.

‘Broken’ allows us to ask those fundamental questions by looking at what we would normally discard and seeing what it has to tell us about something.

It's in the things that we throw away that actually most of our knowledge exist, the knowledge of context.
