Broken is actually an engageable aesthetic as an alternative to the beautiful

Mathew talks about engaging with the ‘broken’ from a philosophical perspective

About the speaker

Matthew Gough is a dance artist and scholar based at the University of South Wales. Originally trained in musical theatre, Matthew developed an interest in contemporary dance during his academic studies which led him to study with renowned improvisation practitioners such as Lisa Nelson.

The daily practice of improvisation (physically and philosophically) is central to his choreographic and pedagogical work. It is from this perspective that he opens up his viewpoints on the ‘broken’. Approaches to improvisation offer more than fix or replacement to the broken, they can offer insight and knowledge of the surrounding conditions.
