Anna León

Meet this month’s REVIVAL speaker: Anna León.

Anna grew up in Los Angeles listening to tango music at her Argentine grandparents’ asados. After college, she deferred her childhood dream career in interior design for her new-found love of teaching tango. For the next 6 years she split her time between touring the US and Canada and living in Buenos Aires, finally settling down in Richmond in 2017.

Anna blends elements of historical tango teaching techniques with more contemporary views of the lead and follow relationship. "I enjoy teaching my students to speak the whole language. I focus on teaching the iconographic gender roles that existed in Buenos Aires in the 30's and 40's, and with this knowledge we can dance the tango with a rich Argentine accent, even in the United States."

Forever a student of the dance, Anna has studied under many teachers, and continues to study under great maestros to this day. She has taught and performed in cities across North America from Los Angeles to Montreal. Her tango clothing line, Forever Ochos, made way for her tango shoe line, which is still up and running called, Anna León Buenos Aires.

At the beginning of pandemic, Anna pivoted and started her own interior design company, Haus of León. She now runs her company with her team of four employees who are always engaged in 10 to 15 projects at a time. In late 2022 she met, fell in love, and married an Argentine tango dancer. They became professional dance partners and within a year they competed and won 1st place in one of their categories at the Official National Argentine Tango competition in California. Since that moment, they decided to open their own school here in Richmond, called Virginia Tango.

Now, like a proper libra searching for beauty and balance, Anna is searching for the perfect harmony between her two careers, where she can share her design gifts alongside her and her husband’s deep love and knowledge of tango with Virginia.
