As part of the Cardiff Design Festival 2019 we were joined by Welsh-born LA-based artist and illustrator Niki Pilkington who talks about her journey to becoming a professional.

Niki discusses her creative process and what inspires her, including combining old traditional Welsh idioms with her signature style of vibrant colours and modern aesthetic. Niki also explains the different facets of her business as an illustrator. She gives a candid look at the pros and cons of being freelance and talks about openly about the things which help her to be creative as well as the things that hinder her.

About the speaker

Niki Pilkington is a Welsh illustrator based in Los Angeles, via New York producing highly charged, trend inspired fashion illustrations. Her playful yet highly detailed style feeds off a love of making life a little bit dreamier, focusing mainly on colour, quotes, lifestyle, fashion and the people who wear it.

She’s been a freelance illustrator ever since graduating from university in London in 2009. Her client list includes the likes of Nike, Google, TOPSHOP, MTV and Sir Paul McCartney and thanks to her ever growing online presence (see instagram @nikipilkington) she successfully sells her prints in retail stores & worldwide online.
