About the speaker
As a damn good student athlete for most of her life, there seemed to be a certain level of “commitment” that coaches and peers expected that was just shy of attained. It’s because she was distracted by pretty things. In a jumble of rhetoric and prose or design and clothes, Najja found solace in that mess that seems to express…. Finally ditching basketball for the last time as a Senior in College, she gave full attention to Art. She completed undergrad with a double major; a BA in Communications and a BA in Studio Art from Pfeiffer University - as a member of the first class to receive the degree. She learned that designing uniforms for the team and taking photos of every moment was a connection because it was creating.
Now as a young adult (can you still say that, at 30?) she has established the artist collective the BLCK family based out of Miami, FL with her long time creative partner, Rashaud Michel. As the co-founder her role encompasses everything from creative direction to graphic design. Stints in Film Production, Hospitality and Fashion all preceded her current home and have added in diversifying her experience. Recently, Najja has partnered with Author Yajaira De La Espada to form Negra Sappha. A literature initiative that is bearing fruit to a collaborative zine and youth creative lab in partnership with the SOHO house in Miami Beach.

Vice City Bean opened in 2016 in Miami’s Arts & Entertainment District. Our vision was to create a neighborhood coffee bar where people could gather or stop by and grab a really good cup of coffee, served by really nice people. Its that simple.
We’re located on the NE corner of the Filling Station Lofts building. Come by and say hello.
