Colby is a Co-Founder and Creative Director of Jolby, a design and illustration studio that makes for the better. He’s also an illustrator with a passion for games like Dungeons & Dragons where he currently DM’s multiple campaigns and hosts a D&D live show in his home town of Portland, OR.

About this FieldTrip

Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop roleplaying game where you can fully immerse yourself as a character of your own making and explore an endless expanse of creative possibilities! Us creative-folk are exceptionally adept at D&D and they don’t even know it yet!

I believe that D&D exists at the apex of creativity, collaboration, storytelling, and being social. It’s a collaborative game where you can tell amazing stories, have unforgettable moments, and solve problems in ways you never thought possible. Everyone has a role, everyone has a job to do, and all are working together toward a common goal. The deeper I went into D&D, the more similarities I found between playing this game and the creative world, not to mention many avenues to express myself creatively in. Years later, with epic D&D-deeds under my belt, I realized that I wanted to share this feeling (the “high,” really) with as many people as possible.

And so I’d love to teach you what it’s all about and how to play so that you can experience it for yourself! I will be focusing on 5th Edition Dungeons & Dragons (the latest edition). All levels of experience are welcome whether you’ve never rolled a dice before or if you were a Warlock in a past life in need of a refresher.

There will be a fun, illustrated handout to finish up the FieldTrip.

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
