Katja shared the inspiring tale of bringing GANNET, a lightship, from the British coast to Basel, to turn it into an alternative cultural space.
About the speaker
Revival â our topic in May!
September 2018 - Four landlubbers from Basel had an idea, stranded in Chatham, Rochester to fall in love: with a huge, red, steel rear end. Because that was the first thing they saw when the lighthouse ship GANNET lay in the mud in front of them. It quickly became clear: this rusty thing had to go to Basel as soon as possible. What started as a beer idee ended up to be one of Baselâs most amazing locations, for food, drinks music and culture.
A Revival in its purest form! A cultural interim use on a former industrial site, directly on the Rhine. Where oil tanks once stood and where an expansion of the Klybeck residential neighborhood in Basel is planned for the future. Revival of the area and revival of various materials meet new ideas and lots of creativity. The fact that even a former, actually disused, ancient lighthouse ship is experiencing a revival after its retirement, sitting in the ground, is unique in the world.
But how do you manage taking such a steel monster down from the UK to Basel? Katja Reichenstein, one of the landlubbers, will be talking about this and many other revivals at Holzpark Klybeck on this very GANNET.
Join us for a breakfast on deck, enjoying the wonderful views on the Rhine while you are sipping your first coffee of the day and follow us down into the belly of GANNET, the club and the cultural heart of the project.
Come on sailors, put on your life jackets and join us on Friday, May 23rd at the GANNET in the Holzpark Kylbeck! We look forward to seeing you!

Our Speaker:
Katja Reichenstein, born in Basel in 1973, was already a free spirit as a child and was rarely fobbed off with short answers to big questions. Hence her interest in understanding and asking questions. As a radio journalist at Radio Basilisk, she was able to practice this for many years. Today, she also does this professionally in several languages as a presenter of panel discussions and conferences.
Her passion for culture, especially music and theatre, has led her to become an active cultural worker over the last 20 years. Projects such as the temporary use of the Klybeck wooden park, with the red lightship âGANNETâ sitting on it, are at the centre of her cultural work. Katja Reichenstein is also a nurse, shiatsu therapist and communications consultant.
Our Location:
Grounded at Holzpark Klybeck in Basel, the lightship GANNET is an alternative cultural centre for music, theatre and everything in between â including a restaurant, bar and sun deck. The concert hall in the shipâs hold quenches a thirst for culture, while the restaurant one deck up satisfies ravenous appetites. The crew is on hand to regale you all year round â with handmade pasta, Italian takes on seasonal specialities and maritime drinks. Psst! There are few places in Basel that get more evening sun than the sun deck with the lighthouse. Ahoy!
