Cathy Deng of Buzzfeed talks about how engineering serendipity and resisting hyper-personalization inspires her work.

Cathy Deng is bored with tech. That’s why she uses her knowledge of networks, intersectionality, and serendipity to create experiences that push people out of their bubbles. Her talk covers how data visualization and interactions can help show a story better than just telling it.

About the speaker

Cathy Deng lives at the intersection of design, code, data, and civics. She’s most interested in the social ramifications of technology: how digital tools impact how we communicate, who we interact with, and whose voices get heard. She’s currently a fellow at the BuzzFeed Open Lab, where she’s building tools for escaping echo chambers & encountering strangers.
