Theme 54: Serendipity

You can't always get what you want, but sometimes you get exactly what you need.

The whole process of nature, is an integrated process with immense complexity. And it is really impossible to tell whether anything that happens in it is good or bad. Because you never know what will be the consequences of the misfortuned or you never know what will be the consequences of the good fortuned.

Persist with optimism.

You have to be the boss of what's right.

It's not about that one brush stroke, it's the whole combination of all of them together that makes up the artwork.

It's important to not view things just as once off instances.

I just marvel, everyday, at the fact that each individual has so much power. I marvel at the fact that one person can make you feel so much better or so much worse. That one person can really change your life.

I think we confuse the difference between a considered risk, and a dumb risk.

Serendipity is the opposite of predictability.

Serendipity is about ease and energy, and it can't come when it's forced, planned, or structured with time.

Walk into the fog of a really big problem, and just take one step. And then reevaluate. And then just take another step. And reevaluate. Instead of having to draw the map in advance.

If there's not a free spot in your calendar, there is no room for randomness. It means everything is planned.

There are a lot of Puritans about... also know as graphic designers.

Sign writers have style they don't have typefaces!

There's nothing that increases your confidence like being confident!

I try not to burn bridges in anger and frustration. You can always quit a job on good terms.

I work hard because why bother at all if you're going to half-ass it.

Serendipity has chance and happiness. We get chance every single day the minute that we wake up. Happiness is something that we choose through the chances that we decide to take.

If somebody has an ugly baby...you should tell them it's an f-ing ugly baby. I think that's important, and one of the reasons why people trust me to make music. I will tell them "That's a bad idea"

Fail as quickly as humanly possible and figure out what not to do.

In the effort to minimize chance, I actually have been maximizing my opportunity for serendipity. The fewer possibilities and probabilities there are, the easier they are to predict and manipulate.

You might be a tuba savant. You might be a black belt. You might be a baker. You might be a ton of things. But most of us don't try enough stuff.

How open the world would be, how much more powerful you'll be if you would just go back to your original self and live life as if you've never experienced it before.

Clear your head because the clearer your mind, the more neutral your eyes, the more open you are to seeing serendipity

Choose to find the potential in what could be considered just "good luck."

It's about what can you do for someone else. And that's the follow-up, that's the maximizing of serendipity. If everyone was thinking this way imagine what the world would be like...

Engage the world looking for potential, so that you'll have more opportunity to experience serendipity in your life.

This was a result of my conscious choice to believe in something, rather than nothing.

I emerged with a sense of peace and calm.

The constant stage of change that we're always living in.

I didn't know how to get out of this crisis I was going through - and then, the rabbit hole presented itself.

I'm keeping an open mind, and when things click and I make a discovery, there's an entertainment value, there's a playoff.

It was a desire worth pursing.

Pursuing the chance to find the potential in something, makes it easier to find the potential in everything.

There are those who see good luck as random or meaningless - and those that say to themselves, "Wait a minute, what just happened here? What is the meaning of this sign?"

I think of the creativity this way: we are all humans, every one of us, is a raw bundle of creative energy, just bursting with creativity, the way we use our toothbrush and the way we put our clothes away and the way we figure out our schedules and all of that. Where design comes into the picture is in this structured way that we can manage that creativity.

If you are not looking for anything in particular, you may find something unexpected.

Good stuff happens to people who are well prepared.

That's serendipity to me. I had to go out and do something that I didn't want to do with one artist, which then turned into something completely different.

If you ever encounter an unpleasant situation or circumstance, I hope you will see it as an opportunity to show up and be a pleasant surprise in someone else's life.
