To speak to this month's theme 'liminal', we're welcoming artist and educator Cara Tierney to the CreativeMornings Ottawa stage. Harnessing the transformative potential of art, Cara will invite us to collaborate with them in building an art installation that actively helps shape the social architecture of public space.

CONTENT WARNING: attending this talk will arouse feelings of queerness.

Cara Tierney (they/them) is a visual artist, curator, researcher, consultant, activist and educator who lives and works on unceded Algonquin land. Cara uses performance, sculpture, social practice, and installation to explore the way language and power conspire to produce meaning in, around, and through the body.

Proudly trans, Cara holds a MA in Canadian Art History from Carleton University, a MFA from the University of Ottawa and they are a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute for Comparative Analysis in Literature, Arts and Culture at Carleton University. Their current research investigates the ways in which art can foster nuanced understandings of identity which question, and move beyond, the limits of language.

Tierney just completed a two-year artist residency at the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine, and they recently accepted a Research Fellowship position with the Trans Media Portal and Trans Media Lab – a digital archival database of trans films and film producers. While engaged in multiple modes of creative cultural production, their artistic practice and consultancy work seek to harness the transformative potential of art in the service of gender liberation for all.

About the theme:
When we find ourselves in an in-between place, we might call our location “liminal.” Liminal space is found at the threshold, between leaving an old life and starting a new one. When we have shed a tired identity but not yet donned a fresh one. Liminality is a state of becoming. It slips away, eluding easy categorization.

Invite yourself into the cocoon of transformation. Instead of asking what comes after the chrysalis, what if, in the words of anthropologist Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, we look around rather than ahead? If we learn to trust the process, we can remain curious and open. We can surrender our certainty and leave ourselves vulnerable and open to the mysteries of being. What joy and sweetness can we find in all this, in the depths of liminal spaces and times?

Our Sofia chapter chose this month’s exploration of Liminal and Sevda Semer illustrated the theme.
