Thank you all for attending Jill’s talk last month on the theme Native.

On February, we delved into the many meanings of NATIVE with Jill Lyons. In true storyteller fashion, Jill Lyons took the Chicago audience through a journey of what it means to belong to a place, to remember where we come from and to honor those who came before, especially our parents and ancestors who often made difficult choices so that we can all be here today.

Lyon’s also reminded the audience of the man who founded Chicago, Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. Just imagine that in the late 1700’s, a black man from Haiti moves to an area on the Chicago river to become a trader,  marries a local Potawatamie woman and speaks several native languages, in addition to European colonial languages. The city of Chicago inherits Jean Baptiste Du Sable’s adventurous and inclusive spirit.

We could not speak on the theme NATIVE without honoring the indigenous First Nations tribes who inhabit this land and continue to teach us the wisdom of living in harmony with the earth. An especially fascinating portion of Lyon’s talk focused on how famed Psychologist, Abraham Maslow, of the ubiquitous Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs pyramid, spent six weeks with the Blackfoot/Siksika tribe in Canada and and he basically stole their idea, but sadly, inverted it for the capitalist/industrial society he returned to. In the Blackfoot/Siksika community, everything begins with self-actualization! They believe it is only after this, that a person can go on to achieve the things they need and want.

James Vukelich Kaagegaabaw, linguist and author of The Seven Generations and The Seven Grandfather Teachings
Fun Fact - Jill Lyons father is Gregory Bibb, a famed Chicago musician who led the 1970s group The Prophets of Soul and he was honored by Mayor Harold Washington as “one of Chicago’s most talented composers/musicians” and marked February 20th as Gregory Bibb Day!

Say hello 👋 to our next Host & Director of CM/Chicago 🎤 Odun Ishola. 🎉

Meet Odun, pronounced “awe-dune” (she/her/hers). Born in Nigeria, raised in Columbus, OH, and now calling Chicago home. Odun is a Taurus sun, Scorpio moon, and Cancer rising (yes, the emo phase was real, folks). 🌍

She thrives in dualities: Introvert with extroverted tendencies, seriously goofy, cautiously adventurous, and logically idealistic - you name it.

Life for Odun is all about vibes. She’s a firm believer that the best connections, whether it’s between brands and consumers or humans just like us, happen through intentional authenticity, radical empathy, and good old open, honest dialogue.

Fueling her days with love for coffee, matcha, and a sprinkle of true crime intrigue. Let’s embark on this friendship journey together. 😊

Take a moment to appreciate the remarkable achievements that we have accomplished in the vibrant artistic community of Chicago.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our extraordinary speakers, hosts of the venue, dedicated volunteers, and invaluable local partners. Their unwavering commitment and assistance have been instrumental in creating a thriving artistic atmosphere in the city. Without their support, our endeavors would not have been possible.

We are truly grateful for their contributions. Let’s continue to foster this artistic community and make even greater strides together!

👏 Three cheers to our graphic designers Kat Graham @katgrahammm & Evy Makris @evymadeart for creating these beautiful design posts. 👏

Give big hugs and a warm thank you to @marlenepaezdukes for being a magnificent Host and Director of the CreativeMornings/Chicago chapter for the past 4 years. 👏

No matter the obstacles, you always bring the team together, generating fantastic events for the Chicago creative community. We thank you and wish you the best in your next chapter. This is not a farewell but a ‘see you later’ until we meet again. Here’s our favorite magic moment with Marlene 📸 and her inspiring quote 😘 ✨

“Being a part of CM for 6 years overall and Host for 4, I witnessed some of our team’s best moments of innovation, challenges of overcoming a pandemic, strength of modeling our values of inclusion against hate and racism, and the joys of coming through to other side with new fortified friendships. It has truly been an honor and privilege to lead this team. I am proud to say that Chicago has been my creative home and grateful that you’ve entrusted my leadership. Know that we have co-created and built this city together.” - Marlene, Host & Director 2019-2023 💛

Big hugs to our digital illustrator 🖍️ Katya Balakina (📸 @xrenobl) for turning our December’s event into magnificent visual notes 📝
