Having the vision to continue evolving with art as a lifeline, allowed this artist to continuously find art as a means of expression and community.

This speaker shared a powerful journey of transformation. Growing up in a West Venice community, he faced challenges as an immigrant child with no guidance, navigating the difficulties of language barriers, cultural divides, and being stereotyped as a potential criminal from a young age. Art, initially through graffiti and tattooing, became both a gateway to expression and to community, eventually leading him to painting, acting and music. After becoming a father and meeting his wife, he began to shift his perspective, recognizing art’s potential to uplift rather than hinder. Now, he runs a nonprofit, guiding youth to harness their creative talents for positive influence, teaching them that art, patience, and empathy can be pathways to a better life.

About the speaker

Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Javier “Spanky” Silva is an artist, musician, and founder of the L.O.C.O.S (Leading Our Children Off Streets) Credible Messengers Program.

With a passion for comic books, art, and graffiti, which eventually led him into gang-related art and tattoos, he found healing and purpose through music, becoming a successful global artist by 2008. Using music and art as outlets for self-expression and positive cultural impact, his journey from gang life to creative success exemplifies resilience and the transformative power of art.

Today, Javier is an inspiring mentor, using his talents to uplift others and share a message of hope and change. Fueled by the vision of family, community, art, and wellness, he’s excited to make new friendships and create new chapters in his Legacy.
