About the speaker
Rachel E Millar studied graphic design at Edinburgh College of Art and took a semester abroad at Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She took a class on hand lettering which ignited her love of typography and was where she discovered signpainting. She moved back to her home city of Glasgow and worked with Ciaran Glöbel of Glöbel Bros Signs in 2017 before starting taking on her own commissions and studio space. In 2022 she hosted ‘Burds of the Brush’, a weekend signpainters meet for women and non-binary painters which was attended by 44 painters from 9 countries. She is particularly passionate about supporting and celebrating non-male painters in what is still a very male dominated industry and craft.
Glasgow signpainter Hana Lindsay is the founder of Sure Signs. Hana discovered signpainting by being continually asked to do chalkboards and window displays in her hospitality jobs. This is where she found her love for hand lettering and design. She began participating in sign painting workshops and was largely self taught until she took the opportunity to travel to Minnesota in the USA to work with celebrated sign painter and teacher Mike Meyer in 2019. She spent a month traveling across the United States and she returned to Glasgow to put her new skills to the test.

Additional details
Bungo Sign Co. is a signpainting collective based in the south side of Glasgow and home to Sure Signs, Rachel E Millar and Peace Signs. It was created as a studio and workshop for all three painters to create their individual projects under their own names and collaborate on larger jobs. The collective also uses the space for workshops, pop up shops and film screenings. At CreativeMornings Rachel and Hana will talk about their individual journeys into signpainting, when they started working together, women in signpainting and what they have planned for Bungo’s future.
