Si Martin from Head Above the Waves joined us for a thought-provoking talk about life’s transitions, in line with this month’s theme of Transit.

Head Above the Waves is a Cardiff-based non-profit organisation that promotes positive and creative ways of dealing with the bad days, and works to raise awareness of self-harm in young people. Driven by passion, Si and his team of just three people - alongside a incredible bunch of volunteers - share people’s stories, advice and ideas, and deliver workshops in schools. Si shared his own life journey and how he keeps inspired to keep creating everyday.

About the speaker

Si Martin is founder of Heads Above the Waves, a depression and self-harm awareness charity. The charity focuses on supporting young people by promoting positive, creative ways of dealing with the bad days. They share people’s stories, straight up advice and ideas of things to try online. They then take it a step further and deliver workshops in schools which help young people try these things out for themselves.

HATW is a team of just 3 and a bunch of amazing volunteers who are super passionate about what they do, and are determined to be the sort of thing they would’ve wanted when they were younger. They also make some badass merch with positive messages behind the designs, to help start conversations and tackle stigma.

As well as his charity work, Si is a self-confessed nerd who tries to hide it by using words like ‘dude’ and ‘man’. He plays drums in Junior and Novo Amor, is a spreadsheet enthusiast and dad joke aficionado.
