About the speaker
Dr. Brandy Lovelady Mitchell is a lifelong children’s and public education advocate who is passionate about helping students and educational staff maximize their potential. She began her career at what is now Network 180, connecting children and families to mental health and substance abuse services. From there she took her love of children and community to the most logical place – our public schools, as a School Counselor, Guidance Classroom Teacher, Consultant and Administrator.
Currently, she serves as the inaugural Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for Kent Intermediate School District.
Like many educators, Brandy has a true love of learning and community. This, combined with the influence of her parents, led her to continue her own education with a host of degrees, although she was the first in her family to go to college.
Dr. Lovelady Mitchell completed a Doctorate of Education Leadership at Eastern Michigan University. Her doctoral studies focused on high-achieving Black males at the secondary level. Dr. Lovelady Mitchell says her intention is to help educators and key stakeholders shift the narrative from pathologies to the success stories of children of color. Her professional work and doctoral studies caused Eastern Michigan University to describe her as an “upcoming educator to watch” and the university has honored her as one of their 2015 Scholars of Excellence. Recently, the Grand Rapids chapter of Historically Black Colleges and Universities honored Brandy as an Elite Educationalist. Mitchell is one of Michigan’s former State Social Action Coordinators for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She has also had the honor of being invited to participate in two White House Convenings related to our former First Lady, Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative. She gladly participated!
Kick off the new year (and new decade!) by learning what it means to establish your ROOTS with Dr. Brandy Lovelady Mitchell, Inaugural Director of Diversity, Inclusion & Equity for the Kent ISD. Dr. Brandy will dive deep into how honoring her roots has allowed her to grow and thrive in her professional and personal life.
We look forward to seeing your bright and smiling faces at The Sovengard at 8:30 am—and not a minute earlier. ;)
