About the speaker
Peter Williams is a constant connector and lifelong learner that embraces the benefits of creativity, diversity and empathy. He is a serial volunteer, active across multiple local, regional, and global networks. He believes in enabling progress by advancing initiatives that promote equality, education, empowerment, entrepreneurship and the environment.
Peter has developed a global career in finance, investment, treasury and banking, starting in his home country Australia, continuing briefly in London, with extended stays in Singapore and Hong Kong. Parallel he has maintained at least equal interest in the arts, sport, and the value of stories. All of this has combined into a wide variety of interests, including ways to shape corporate culture, amplify creativity, and increase innovation. This includes a collection of tools and techniques that fuel continuous experiments, accelerate action, and convert strategy into reality.
He is an angel investor and mentor to several startup programs, including hosting a series of Citi FinTech Meetups in Hong Kong. This helped connect Citi to the grass root startup scene and showcased topics that include Women in FinTech, Artificial Intelligence, Innovation Leadership, Wearable IoT, and the Economics of Cryptocurrency.
One of the volunteering included time as President of The University of Chicago Booth School of Business alumni club in Hong Kong. Some of the causes discovered share a similar theme — fighting poverty through education, including The School of St Jude in Tanzania, Room to Read, and Caring for Cambodia. Some causes mix fun with philanthropy, such as the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, a global motorcycle community that raises awareness and funding for men’s health. Another is Skateistan, a skateboarding school for girls with operations that began in Afghanistan before expanding to South Africa and Cambodia. Peter is a director on the board of Music For Life International, a charity based in New York that creates transformative social impact through music. He is also director and treasurer of Resolve Foundation, a free leadership program in Hong Kong focused on promoting tolerance and inclusion.
Peter speaks on topics that include how innovation happens, the value of volunteering, and how to build an authentic network. He is motivated and energised by connecting with a wide range of people and continuing conversations to discover shared interests and causes — the next step is to explore opportunities to collaborate.
As a lifelong learner, Peter recommends maintaining a growth mindset, playing with lean startup experiments, and applying an agile approach to project management. Peter is active across mainstream sports such as golf and tennis, plus alternative sports including skateboarding and bicycle motocross. He is as excited by the future of finance as the inclusion of skateboarding, BMX, and surfing in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He is an active supporter of creative communities including TEDx, PechaKucha, CreativeMornings, FuckUpNights, The School of Life, and StoryCorps. For the record, Peter is also passionate about his gorgeous wife Catherine, their four children, and their extended collection of family, friends, classmates, and colleagues.
Along the way Peter has discovered that a key ingredient for innovation also provides fuel for adventure. His second book will be self-published in 2020, focusing on the benefits of “productive accidents”. The book is designed to be a playbook for personal and professional adventure — his talk at CreativeMornings will provide a preview, sharing ways to INVEST in sustainable serendipity.
