About the speaker

Six-time GRAMMY¼ Award nominee Nnenna Freelon has earned a well-deserved reputation as a compelling and captivating live performer as well as recording artist. As a writer, composer, producer and educator, the songstress has performed at prestigious venues and events from The Kennedy Center to The White House and The Grammy. Recently, she was nominated in the Best Vocal Jazz Album category for her latest album, “Time Traveler” (Origin Records), her eleventh, and her first studio
recording in a decade.

The loss of her soulmate and husband of forty years, renowned architect Philip Freelon designer of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC, in 2019 to ALS, followed by the loss of her sister Debbie in 2020 to cancer, have led to her new recording “Time Traveler”. The album is an intimate expression of love dedicated to her late husband. It is also a love letter to all who’ve lost someone dear to them. Freelon holds nothing back in her open and passionate musical expression.
