The Architekturmuseum was established in 1868 as a teaching collection for students of architecture at the New Polytechnic College (Neue Polytechnische Schule), the precursor to the present-day Technical University (Technische Universität München). When Friedrich von Thiersch erected a new building for the University in Gabelsbergerstrasse in 1912, the architectural collection was accommodated in a large, representative wing of the building and formed the center of the Department of Architecture.
Housing four museums under one roof devoted to art, works on paper, architecture and design, the Pinakothek der Moderne ranks as one of the greatest collectors of artworks in Europe. Its trans-disciplinary approach – as expressed in its concept of “four-in-one” – is both visionary and, for the most part, unique.
Ever since it was founded, the Pinakothek der Moderne has continued to offer a single ticket that allows visitors to discover all four of the art disciplines on display, to develop new perspectives and to experience them in all their diversity and topicality. The central feature of the Pinakothek der Moderne complex is its imposing glass rotunda, which serves as a vibrant place of encounter and acts as point of departure for the continual stream of exhibitions, tours and cultural events.
The Pinakothek der Moderne as a forum for exploring current trends wishes its visitors many inspiring moments and an exciting stay!

About the tour
Our theme for July is “TRUST”. In addition to our regular morning event, join us as as Damjan Kokalevski – curator, architect, researcher – guides us through “The Gift – Stories of Generosity and Violence in Architecture,” an exhibit from Architekturmuseum der TUM at Pinakothek der Moderne. He will share his unique perspectives on how the building of trust between communities and donors is a crucial, yet often missing, component to the design of public spaces.
