Matt Alvis

Matt Alvis -- aka @stencilspray -- is a painter, art curator, mentor, and facilitator deeply embedded in the Charlotte arts community. Known for his intricate, hand-cut multi-layer stencil and spray paint artwork, Alvis also works in collage, acrylic, and occasionally large-scale murals.

In 2024, Alvis co-founded Activation Studios with business partner Logan Phillips. Located on the arts+ campus in Plaza Midwood, Activation Studios offers equitable workspace for over 20 visual artists and affordable music rehearsal space for more than 80 musicians.

Alvis has previously curated several influential art spaces in Charlotte, including TAC Gallery (NoDa, 2020–2023; Uptown, 2024–2025), Art Cart NoDa, a local art delivery initiative, and the Charlotte SHOUT! Lounge.

His artwork is available for purchase at a number of local venues, including Activation Studios, Tip Top Market, Sip City, Divine Barrel, The Exchange, Copperhead, NoDa Bodega, The Evening Muse, and Amaze Apartments.
