Question & answer time with Mary Jo Hoffman
Mary Jo Hoffman tells the story of her daily nature blog, Still Blog, and how the project taught her about creative routine, seeing beyond the ordinary, and not being afraid of imperfection.
About the speaker
Mary Jo Hoffman is a Twin Cities native. She was a tomboy who grew up in Shoreview, MN building forts and spending long summer afternoon on the lake. After getting a graduate degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from Stanford University, she returned to Minneapolis and spent the next 15 years doing research in flight controls for Honeywell Aerospace. The job required significant travel, so in 2002, she left the corporate world behind in order to focus on family life and raising kids. She had been a lifelong creative dabbler, and as the kids grew older and more independent, she increasingly threw herself into art and design. On January 1st, 2012 she posted her first photograph to her newly minted photo-a-day blog named STILL. The modern minimalism of the blog caught national attention. In 2016, she was fortunate enough to launch product lines featuring her artwork with both Target and West Elm. Mary Jo lives on Turtle Lake, in Shoreview, with her husband of 27 years, Steve Hoffman, two kids, Eva and Joseph, 80,000 honey bees, 2 pampered chickens, and 1 neurotic puggle named Jack. She continues to post one image a day to STILL, and in 2017 added the additional challenge of making a collage a day. You can follow her daily creative journey on her blog at STILLblog.net or on Instagram @maryjohoffman.
