Living, writing and sharing PARALLEL stories

Local creative entrepreneur and writer, Valeria L. Palmertree, shares how her PARALLEL stories – as an immigrant, parentless daughter, military wife, cancer survivor and mother – have shaped her storytelling and her perspective on living a creative life.

About the speaker

Valeria is a writer, editor, and professional storyteller with nearly two decades of public relations experience, which has included overseeing communications programs for destinations and hotels across the U.S., hosting immersive culinary experiences at the James Beard House, and guiding crisis communications response during the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, and most recently, during a global pandemic.

Valeria is passionate about stories – finding them, reading them, writing them, and sharing them. She has cultivated this passion professionally, crafting and sharing stories on behalf of clients from the beaches of Florida to the magical mountainside of Aspen, and from the laidback coast of Central California to the culinary gems of Virginia.

In 2019, Valeria launched her own full-time consulting business. Through The Palm Tree Type, she helps brands identify, craft, and impactfully share their stories. Clients have included WaterColor Inn, Commune, Yorkie’s, New Orleans Auction, Visit Virginia Beach, and Atlantic Park..

In addition to her public relations work, Valeria’s writing has appeared in multiple national publications; on her blog, she also muses on life, travel, and food.

Since relocating to Virginia Beach 10 years ago, Valeria has been immersed in the city’s emerging creative scene. She led media relations efforts for Visit Virginia Beach, managed communications for Grow and Assembly, and participated in various Story Exchange events. She has been a “Friend of the ViBe” since the district’s inception, is an active volunteer for Creative Mornings Virginia Beach, and regularly donates her time and expertise to local businesses and nonprofits.

A native of Argentina and raised in Miami Beach, Valeria is fluent in Spanish, Malbec, and Fútbol. In 2024, Valeria welcomed her daughter just six months after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Now in remission, Valeria is happiest surrounded by nature, books, music, and loved ones, including her husband of 12 years, their 15-month-old daughter, and their 10-year-old golden retriever.

Always the optimist, Valeria believes that connecting with and learning from others is the surest way to break barriers and spread joy.
