“Art can make you feel less alone”. Five films and five moments in a filmmaker’s life.

About the speaker

Leo (they/them) was born in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and grew up in Pakistan and Turkey.
They studied philosophy in Amsterdam, Tokyo and London and trained as a filmmaker at the KASK School of Arts in Ghent where they graduated with their master's film 'If only for a moment', with Charlotte De Bruyne and Sallie Harmsen in the leading roles.
Recently they collaborated again with Charlotte De Bruyne on their newest short film 'Wait', produced by MARKS, which premiered at the International Short Film Festival Leuven, where the 10-year-old main lead Pip Campbell obtained the prize for Best Actress.
In addition to being a filmmaker, they're also a writer, publishing their debut novel “Voorbij waren al die dagen gegaan” (“All those days that have passed”) with Atlas/Contact Publishers in 2016.

Monumental Performances

In this talk, Leo navigates the history of “monumental performances” in trans and queer cinema, through their own personal history of how they are formed as a trans and queer person and filmmaker today, circumventing or turning around the “monumental performances” (mainly by cis and straight actors) lauded in awards season.
