They say opposites attract – but what happens when opposites decide to go into business together? Running a business is one of the hardest things you can do. When you add different work styles plus a marriage, it gets even more complicated. Here, Katie and Dan talk about how their different backgrounds and different styles lead to a better end product, and that symmetry is ultimately rooted in finding common ground in the the big picture.
About the speaker
➤ Katie has over 15 years of broad-ranging experience in public and private
sector work in Buffalo, Washington, D.C., New York City, and Seoul, South Korea.
She has extensive expertise in developing and implementing targeted
communications strategies aimed at reaching internal and external
stakeholders, as well as the media. Katie has a proven track record of
managing a wide range of successful creative projects, and is particularly
adept at making strategic recommendations tailored to an organization’s
unique needs, goals and objectives. Katie currently resides on the boards
for the Richardson Center Corporation and the Eric Wood Fund, and is a
founding board member of K-8 charter school Persistence Preparatory Academy.
➤ Dan is a seasoned web developer, mobile app developer, and technical advisor
with more than 20 years of experience building custom solutions for a
variety of businesses, including Mattel, Birds Eye Foods, and North American
Breweries. Earlier in his career, Dan co-founded clevermethod, a local web
development company, which he helped grow to a Fortune 5000 business. He
also founded You and Who, a social good tee-shirt company now operating as
26 Shirts; was a founding organizer for Startup Weekend Buffalo; and
co-chair for BarCamp Buffalo 2014. Dan has served on several nonprofit
boards, including March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, and InfoTech
Niagara, and currently resides on the advisory board for WBFO/WNED. He is
also a member of the Rotary Club of Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus. Named
one of Buffalo Business First’s 40 Under 40 in 2013, Dan is a tireless
advocate for the start-up and tech community in Western New York.
