Krystie Yen

Creativity Coach & Nonprofit Founder at Slant’d.

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Krystie Yen is a curious multi-passionate creative on a mission to make the world a more vibrant place by cultivating self-confidence in the next generation of dreamers and doers. She is the Founder & Executive Director of Slant’d, a nonprofit publishing house that celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander voices; a creativity coach, a seasoned brand and community strategist, and a storytelling instructor for The Moth. Long-term obsessions include butter croissants, spicy foods, the Oxford comma, and all things print. You can usually find her tending to her vegetable garden, experimenting in new artistic mediums (tattooing, anyone?), or basking in the sun with her super mutt, Hunter.

About this FieldTrip

This interactive workshop is designed specifically to help procrastinators make moves on a creative project using a low stakes, visual medium: junk journaling (think of it like scrapbooking’s casual cousin)!

Through a blend of guided visualization and low pressure collaging, you’ll clarify the essence of a creative project (whether it’s a newsletter, podcast, art practice, or new business idea) and create a “good enough” project vision—just in time for Aries season!

You’ll leave with:

✔️ A fun and repeatable ritual to help you break free of procrastination

✔️ Clarity about what project you really want to work on

✔️ A tangible creative project vision that can serve as your north star

This is for anyone who has an idea they’ve been “meaning to start,” but keeps waiting for that perfect moment or plan.

Agenda

  • 🧘 Opening Visualization: Inspired by “The Art of Noticing,” this mindful visualization will take you to meet your Inner Mentor, debunk the lies of perfectionism, and activate creative awareness so you can access clarity about what creative dream wants to emerge.

  • ✂️ Parallel Play: After a brief introduction and overview of junk journaling, you’ll use magazines, printed images, paper scraps, markers, and any other “junk” you have on hand to create your “good enough” creative vision page.

  • 💬 Connect and Commit: We’ll witness each other’s dreams and reflections through an optional group share before closing out with a shared accountability moment to keep the momentum going into the new year.

What to know or bring

  • Any “junk” you have readily available (e.g., old magazines, catalogues, receipts, postcards, stickers, ticket stubs, junk mail, paper scraps, dried florals)

  • Any art or mark-making supplies you have on hand (e.g., markers, crayons, colored pencils)

  • Scissors

  • Glue stick or tape (washi tape is great, but not required)

  • Whatever surface you’d like to junk journal on (could be in a notebook or loose leaf sheets of paper)

  • If you want to go digital, then any digital collage app (e.g., Canva, Procreate, Photoshop, etc.), plus screenshots or saved images for collaging

What to expect

Workshop format!

It will be recorded!

How to make the most of FieldTrips

The FieldTrips experience is defined not only by what the host has to share, but also by how we show up individually and collectively. The way we show up impacts our capacity to be moved, inspired, and activated.

Show up fully

Get ready to be immersed! Engage with smiles, nods, waves, emojis. Share in the chat. Get cozy. Turn off notifications. Sip your favorite beverage.

Stay curious

Wear your beginner’s hat. Go with the flow. Welcome the stumbles and fumbles. Congratulate yourself for trying. Keep going!

Celebrate your host

Our hosts are members of the CreativeMornings community—just like you! Everyone comes to this with different backgrounds—a lot of our hosts have never done anything like this before! And we love that! Cheer them on when something goes awry and when it goes perfectly.

Support each other

We’re all figuring things out in real time. Celebrate, rather than critique emerging ideas. Cheer each other on as you try new things.  Try “Yes! And…” in conversation.

Not vibing?

It’s 100% okay when a FieldTrip does not resonate with you. Pop out quietly and try another experience later. Fill out the survey with your feedback (no dms to host or chat commentary, please.)
