About the speaker

John Pettit is Assistant Archivist at Temple University Libraries’ Special Collections Research Center where his work is focused on preservation and digitization of archival material related to contemporary Philadelphia history. The last two years, he’s also worked as the head of Atlas Obscura Society Philadelphia, partnering with artists, historians, non-profits and businesses to create unique events and experiences in the Philadelphia-region.

A lifelong Philadelphian, John’s creative endeavors also have included producing documentary and experimental media with TermiteTV Collective and Scribe Video Center and as a musician in a range of ensembles and productions. His most recent musical projects include the band Callowhill and Ruins of Friendship Orchestra, which is an ensemble that has spent seven years providing live accompaniment to an experimental, live documentary exploring The Pine Barrens region of New Jersey.

John holds two B.A.s from Temple University in Geography and Urban Studies and Film and Media Arts and an M.A. in Public History. His academic, professional and creative pursuits have largely centered on people’s experience and representation of place. John lives in South Philadelphia with his partner, 10-month-old son, Miles and two cats.
