About the speaker

Joe Thottungal, hailing from Kerala, South India, embarked on his culinary journey from Chennai to Mumbai, Saudi Arabia, Toronto, and Windsor, before settling in Ottawa in 2002.

Throughout his career, Joe has been honoured as Ottawa Chef of the Year (2008) and received medals at Canadian Culinary Championships. He's deeply involved in community work, leading Ottawa charity Food for Thought and earning the Order of Ottawa. Alongside, running his restaurants: Coconut Lagoon and Thali. Recognized as New Maker of the Year by Ottawa Business Journal and Ottawa Board of Trade in 2022, Joe is also an esteemed author, with books like "Coconut Lagoon: Recipes from a South Indian Kitchen" (2019) and "My Thali" (2023).
