Jess George asks the question: Are you the hero of your own story?

When Jess George was a child, her greatest aspiration was to be a girl detective like Nancy Drew. At 4 years old, her mother began reading the Nancy Drew books to her. Within a few years, she had read them all, sometimes twice, pouring over the illustrations, re-reading thrilling passages and learning the sleuthing lexicon. In this talk, Jess teaches us how to talk like a girl detective – a skill that she has used to effectively confront real-life bullies and villains throughout her career in social justice.

About the speaker

Jess George is the Community Impact Manager for Google Fiber in Charlotte, North Carolina. Prior to her role with Google Fiber, Jess has spent her career in the nonprofit sector, most recently as the Executive Director of the Latin American Coalition, North Carolina's largest Latino immigrant justice organization. After nearly 11 years with the Coalition, Jess left to join the Google Fiber team, where she works with community leaders, organizations and neighborhoods to address issues of access, opportunity and digital inclusion. Originally from a tiny town in central New York state, Jess got her BA in International Politics from Penn State University. She has called Charlotte home for 16 years and lives in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood with her family.
