In several steps, we’ll explore how different perspectives and ways of working can sometimes create obstacles but, at their best, strengthen our thinking and creative output.

As creatives, how do we “stay fresh”? In the creative mornings session “Parallel”, I want to dig a little deeper with you. Parallel lines never meet, yet when viewed from a distance, they appear to merge into a single, indistinguishable line. Many lines, yet all seem the same. In the creative and design field, countless ideas run in parallel—appearing strikingly similar, even identical when viewed from afar. So, how do we create something genuinely new? How do we break away from these parallels and “de-parallelize” our creative approach to uncover fresh, innovative ideas and solutions? In several steps, we’ll explore how different perspectives and ways of working can sometimes create obstacles but, at their best, strengthen our thinking and creative output. We will take brief moments for reflection to consider where and how we can integrate these approaches into our daily work as designers and creatives. Parallel I: What are the parallel tracks in our creative process and design work? Who are the partners that complement and expand our thinking? What best practices must we master before breaking free to create something truly original? Parallel II: When do our paths cross, and even need to cross with others, so that we leave the beaten path and invite the new? How do we break the rules of physics and allow parallel lines to meet? Parallel III How do we embrace chance, drop the Mikado sticks, and work with what we find? What happens when a pile of unsorted ideas sparks fresh insights, or when weaving together different threads results in something both novel and meaningful?

About the speaker

Hi I am Volker! As a Senior Customer Experience Designer at Lufthansa Airlines, I envision better ways of travelling, enhancing the guest journey at every touchpoint. With over 25 years of experience in innovation, product, and service design, as well as business and organizational strategy — across the private and public sectors — I have worked in Europe, the USA, and the UAE as a practitioner and consultant in an international design firm prior to joining the Lufthansa CX team. I thrive on close collaboration with designers, internal teams, and external clients, not only developing new ideas and solutions but also empowering others to do the same. My mantra: show don’t tell.
