Husband and wife duo, Stephan and Mary, felt trapped before they began exploring family dynamics, suburban life and consumer excess through art.

About the speaker

Hillerbrand+Magsamen are a collaborative husband and wife visual artist team of Stephan Hillerbrand and Mary Magsamen. They expand their personal family life into a contemporary art conversation about family dynamics, suburban life and consumer excess with their performance based videos, photography and installations. They exhibit their work internationally in galleries, museums and festivals. They have been awarded grants from Austin Film Society’s Texas Filmmakers’ Production Fund, Ohio Arts Council, Houston Arts Alliance, a Carol Crow Fellowship from the Houston Center for Photography and they received a Houston Airport System's video commission to be installed in the fall of 2014 at Intercontinental Airport. Stephan Hillerbrand is an Associate Professor at the University of Houston and Mary Magsamen is the Curator at Aurora Picture Show. They have two children, three dogs and a chicken.
