Hilary Green speaks on the surprises that one encounters when traveling across the world.
After such a career, it may be no surprise that she contemplates her imminent freedom from work ties both with a sense of liberation and a sense of loss…..
About the speaker
Hilary’s long career in training and consultancy in international trade started when, as a graduate in European languages, she decided to focus on facilitating connections between European nations.
Travelling and living in Europe was second nature to her, even before the days of cheap flights and fast trains! Time spent in hospitality in Provence and Bavaria was followed by teaching English in northern Germany. A career in project management for international trade followed, and Hilary was soon involved in hands-on cross-border projects between the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Scandinavia. Founding her own company in the 1990’s, she was quickly involved in company projects for the German Ministry of Trade, and could be found blazing a trail through the (then) new German States of Brandenburg, Saxony and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern!
Perhaps it was inevitable that, with her family grown, it felt like time to take a career break in Sri Lanka, working as a business consultant to hard-pressed charities along the beautiful, but Tsunami-affected south coast.
On her return, she was scooped up by UK Trade & Investment (now DIT) to join their International Trade Advisor team in the South West, becoming a trade specialist for the new EU states of Central Europe.
10 years on, it’s time to hang up her boots. And after such a career, it may be no surprise that she contemplates her imminent freedom from work ties both with a sense of liberation and a sense of loss…..
