‘Growth’ with Katie and Phil Hume-Hopper, founders of Glasgow Southside Slowies

About the speaker

The Glasgow Southside Slowies were established in 2022 following the recognition that, although local running groups purported to welcome every pace, the reality was quite different; it became clear that the word slow was very subjective.

Since then, the club has gained over 3,000 Facebook members, and have had up to 140 people at a time attend runs, with an estimated total of more than 1,000 Slowies taking part in various sessions over the years.

The Slowies are now proud to provide a supportive and encouraging space for slower-paced runners who may not feel represented in mainstream running groups, and promise that no pace is ever too slow.

A key part of the club’s growth has been ensuring that it is as inclusive and engaging as possible—enabling those who have never run, and/or who don’t see themselves as runners, to build confidence, as well as providing a supportive space for more experienced runners.

Purpose

"The Glasgow Southside Slowies proudly provide a supportive and encouraging space for slower-paced runners who may not feel represented in mainstream running groups.

We are more than just a running club, we are a vibrant community built on inclusivity and accessibility, motivating as many people as possible to get active, whether this is running, jogging or walking.

Additional details

Join us for another cosy morning meet-up with Glasgow Southside Slowies founders Katie and Phile Hume-Hopper.

Katie and Phil will be talking about growing their running club to a community with over 3,000 Facebook members, with up to 140 people attending sessions! Over the years they have had thousands of people run in the club, creating a place for those who have never run, or don’t see themselves as runners, to build confidence, as well as providing a supportive space for more experienced runners.

We’ll also be treated to some lovely music from Irish folk indie musician Colm O’Sullivan, plus our usual delicious breakfast spread of pastries, fruit and coffee 🥐☕️

This will be our last meet-up of 2025 so we’d love to see you there!
