About the speaker
Veronica is a professional feminist, recovering soccer mom, and writer. She serves as the director of the University of Illinois at Chicago’s (UIC) Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives. She has worked at UIC for 25 years, serving as the program director of L@s GANAS (Latin@s Gaining Access to Networks for Advancement in Science), a program designed to support UIC’s efforts to increase the number of Latinx and low-income students attaining degrees in STEM fields and is the genesis for the Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives.
On May 2nd, Veronica will be sworn into the inaugural class of Chicago Police District Councils, an effort to bring community member voices into the crafting of public safety policy and holding police accountable for misconduct.
Veronica has also served as the director of the UIC Women in Science Engineering program. Under her leadership, the program was recognized with a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring in 2011.
Veronica is a respected member of the local and national feminist community. Her writing has been featured in the New York Times, USA Today, Bitch Media, NPR.org and anthologies. Her first solo book comes out in May and is a children's book about social justice. She is a frequent speaker on all things feminist, especially education equity, reproductive justice, feminist parenting, and social media. Media appearances have included being a regular guest on Vocalo’s “The Morning AMp,” highlighted in Ms. Magazine, an Emmy award winning feature on WGN-TV, NBC Nightly News, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, WGN-Radio and MSNBC.
She holds a bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences and a masters in Public Administration, both with concentrations in Gender and Women’s Studies, both degrees from UIC. Veronica lives on the far north-side of Chicago with her college-aged daughter.
