About the speaker
Conrad Botes considers himself to be a comic artist, and even though he may digress into making paintings on glass, or handsome and brilliant objects of furniture and lights, it is the jagged graphic line, the searingly acid, iconoclastic storyline which cuts to the heart of the sacred cows of Afrikaner culture which turn him on artistically.
He has previously held solo exhibitions at Stevenson Cape Town in 2007, 2009 and 2011, and at Stevenson Johannesburg in 2009 & 2012.
His biting satire, frequently directed at South African society, politics and religion, is channelled into both his painting and printmaking, and his comics which have been published in the Bitterkomix series, alongside those of his frequent collaborator Anton Kannemeyer, since the early 1990s.
For his Zombie Babylon exhibition Botes continues his recent series of paintings on canvas while also showing his distinctive reverse-glass paintings, sculptures and drawings. The paintings on this show have evolved from the religious imagery he presented at his last exhibition at the gallery in Cape Town.
He has continued to explore repetition, the effect of which is to make sacred images, especially, more overtly consumable. Over the past few months he has also been fascinated by the optical effects of colour, and has created paintings that pulsate with a psychedelic intensity. The result is an unlikely and unexpected presentation of iconic images.
We believe true beauty comes from the heart. For us, beauty is much more than a pretty face. It’s about feeling good and doing good, too
