Chitra talks about her experience honing her creativity through education, motherhood, and taking risks.
About the speaker
Chitra Gopalakrishnan is a graphic designer with more than 20 years working in corporate branding in Paris, New Delhi, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Boston and now in San Diego. She is the lead-designer of an artisanal weaving revival project in India called Kara Weaves, which she co-owns with her mother Indu Menon, since 2007. She is a formally trained fine artist and graphic designer (ESAG Penninghen, France, 2004 and the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, 2009).
Chitra’s current explorations in painting are a continuation of her training as a fine artist and are informed by her professional and personal experiences. She tries to multi-task on a daily basis: from remaining curious about fine art, becoming a better designer, to growing her social enterprise and her most critical role: raising a little boy. All these are aspects she references in her work, while hoping to maintain an authentic studio practice.
