Charlie Thomas shares how their art and conservation work intersect, providing an outlet for expression and education.

About the speaker

Charlie Thomas is a 20-year-old bird lover and artist with a passion for the environment, especially the impact that humans are having on it.

Charlie’s journey in conservation has greatly influenced their art over the years, most pieces inspired by an animal or environmental cause. In 2020, Charlie spent 9 months living on and restoring one of the world’s most remote islands, Kure Atoll, surrounded by nothing but albatrosses and ocean — ā€œArt and writing became my way of telling Kure’s story and the struggles faced by marine wildlife in the North Pacific Oceanā€. Charlie currently lives on Waiheke and works full time as the monitoring technician for Te Korowai o Waiheke, working towards making the island predator free, while continuing to write and paint about the creatures they encounter while working in the bush.
