About the speaker

Amanda graduated from UTSA with an Interdisciplinary Studies degree. She taught in Northside ISD for six years and AHISD for seven years, earning her master’s degree in Teacher Leadership. Amanda also worked at PreK4SA for 2 years. It was there she was asked to join the San Antonio Zoo as their director of Zoo School.

Currently, and in addition to being Zoo School Director, Amanda is working towards a PhD degree in International Education and Entrepreneurship at UIW .

Amanda is on the Cities Connecting Children to Nature grant committee, the leadership team for OLE! Texas (a state-wide Texas Health and Human Services initiative), and on the Networking Committee for the North American Association for Environmental Education’s Natural Start Alliance. She is founder of NEST, Nature-based Education Support in Texas, which is an organization connecting educators who value the connection between nature and their students. She is also actively working on a city-wide Classroom Crawl series, which will connect teachers from all over the city to share best practices and innovative teaching practices.

Amanda is married to a police officer who is an Air Force veteran. They have 3 kids, ages 18, 7, and 3… so there is never a dull moment in their household.
