Enjoy the time we have here on earth. That’s what I came here for. I came to celebrate the wonder of it and I don’t need to know everything. There are people out there – “What about this?” – always trying to stay in control. I know I am finite. I won’t be here forever. I get to leave a little legacy here, a mural there.

Until we reconnect with nature, we can never really feel whole

May you be a powerful diversifying force. May you be seen only by those who will leave you be, and … by kin.

To any plant or animal (human or nonhuman) trying to evade colonization, standardization, homogenization, manipulation, marketization, domination: May you stay invisible to those who want to carve the world apart.

To the fossilized remains of dead plants and animals deep in the earth’s belly, those that have yet to be labeled “oil reserves” and even those that have: May you stay in the ground undiscovered, undisturbed and undisturbing.

To the uncontacted tribes of the the Amazon; I was told you were nearby when I visited but saw no trace: May you remain invisible to eyes who will see you only through the lens of profit.

To the so-called illegal aliens, persecuted minorities, women and LGBTQ folks fleeing patriarchy, people fleeing war, the list could go on and on: May you remain invisible to those who seek to harm you.

Even though the liminal space is hard, even though it’s boring – oh, it can be boring too because you’re waiting for something happen and it just doesn’t. It can be painful. This space that we’re avoiding is where the best stories are told – this is where life is lived. Our stories are not told in the comfort zone when we are chilling, watching Netflix. Our stories are told when we are suffering in the liminal space, when we are giving it our all, when we are trying our hardest, when we are getting rejected. It’s also the place where we experience our most expansive growth.

As I’ve spent time in the academic and popular literatures, which is my job – to read, I quickly realized that our foundational understanding of what it means to be an effective leader has not adapted as the demographic topography of leadership has shifted. This is holding us all back from reaching our potential and success.

Understanding purpose can make hard things easier and can make impossible things doable.

Stop following your dreams. ... What I want you guys to do is develop your dreams. Build your dreams. Don't follow them. Work on them.

Consciously make a mistake and see what happens.
