Vee Motingoa has a long-standing history with Greenside Design Center. After graduating from GDC in 2015 with a BA in Multimedia Design, he went on to become an Art Director at some of Johannesburg’s top advertising agencies working on a bevy of South Africa’s most beloved brands such as Unilever, Nestlé, and Standard Bank. Despite a burning passion for design and brand identity, Vee was unable to find fulfilment as a commercial creative and eventually made the decision to retire from the advertising industry. Having always had an amour fou for race and identity politics, he went back to GDC in 2019 to complete his honours which earned him a membership in the International Society of Typographic Designers. While Vee has always fully devoted himself to education and his career, he has always valued freedom of expression and self-expression and has always found ways to strike the perfect balance between work and play. What began as some random guitar playing in a café, eventually led him to co-found Half Tones and Broken Bones. Where he fused his love for music, performing at shows he was organizing with promotional content he designed. Which earned him the privilege to share stages with amazing local talents such as Boxer, The Sextons, and Joshua Kempen. In 2018, Vee launched Side Hustlers, a platform providing support to Black and PoC (Person of Colour) creatives. With an ethos built around the premise of an existing, thriving Black and PoC creative community being overlooked by mainstream media. This catalyzed a new passion for understanding and affecting the representation of the Black Body in mass media, allowing him to fuse his intrigue with the advertising machine, with his passion for racial identity politics. In 2019 he founded his ultimate playground, FUCK CISIETY, an online publication which aims to disrupt and dismantle the patriarchy; comprising of a collection of think-pieces by members of the transgender community, whom Vee has always openly advocated for. In 2020 he joined GDC as a multimedia design lecturer, bringing with him a passion and understanding, with experience in the advertising industry, along with a heavy emphasis on designing for social justice.
