Our theme for July is MENTOR. It was chosen by our Glasgow chapter in Scotland, illustrated by Molly Hankinson, and is presented by Adobe.  

No one is born with all the knowledge and skills they’ll need to thrive in life. That’s why kids go to school. But we shouldn’t stop learning once we graduate. We need to find new teachers. 

A mentor doesn’t have to be an expert or the top of their field. Just someone who’s been there and done that before. Someone to show you the way and offer a bit of advice and encouragement. Ideally, they’re willing to make introductions and mention your name when you’re not in the room. 

Being a mentor is considered a way of giving back. But mentors get just as much out of the relationship, if not more. Beyond the satisfaction of helping, mentors also learn from their mentees. From a fresh way of looking at established practices to tackling new problems with a beginner’s mind. 

So, ask for help. We all could use a guide as we climb. Find your mentors and be a mentor in return. Your plans for growth are more likely to succeed if they include lifting others up as you rise.

Nadie nace teniendo todo el conocimiento y las habilidades necesarios para progresar

en la vida. Por eso los chicos van a la escuela. Pero no deberíamos dejar de aprender

cuando nos graduamos. Tenemos que seguir buscando nuevas personas que nos

enseñen.

Un mentor no tiene que ser un experto ni la persona más reconocida en su campo.

Basta con que sea alguien que ya haya pasado por lo mismo. Alguien que pueda

mostrarte el camino y te dé algunos consejos y ánimo. Lo ideal sería que también

estuviese dispuesto a presentarte gente y a hablar bien de ti cuando no estés presente.

Ser mentor se considera una forma de retribuir. Pero, en realidad, los mentores también

ganan mucho con esa relación, si no más. Además de la satisfacción de ayudar, los

mentores también aprenden de aquellos a quienes guían. Desde una nueva manera de

considerar prácticas ya establecidas hasta a abordar nuevos problemas con

mentalidad de principiante.

Así que, pide ayuda. A todos nos viene bien que nos den una mano. Busca a tus

mentores y conviértete en mentor de alguien más. Es más probable que tus planes de

crecimiento funcionen si, mientras subes, ayudas a levantar a otras personas”.
