Community Spotlight: Kurt Pennypacker

Welcome to Community Spotlight, featuring members of our Creative Mornings Community! We are so grateful to our community, and love learning more about our members’ creative life and what makes them tick.
This month’s Spotlight Feature is Kurt Pennypacker (he/him)...
Q. Where are you from? If not Columbus, how did you land here?
I was born in Kingston, NY but moved when I was 1yo. I grew up in Venice and Boca Raton, Florida. Then, Orlando. Then, Chicago. Then, Austin. Now Columbus. My wife is from Clintonville. Family brough us back.
Q. Growing up, what was your family like? Any siblings?
I'm pretty close with my parents even though I don't live close to them. My brother, Jason, lived in Philly before he passed in 2014.
Q. Where do you live now?
Old Worthington
Q. Who do you consider your family today?
My friends. They are my family and they are all over the map. Gives me many places to visit.
Q. How do you spend your days? What’s your area of expertise?
I'm a designer by trade and a (wannabe) artist at heart. I spend my time listening to music, working on art and other projects. I recently got into 3D printing.
Q. What’s the first creative thing you remember making?
When I was in 3rd grade, a drawing of a monkey climbing a coconut tree on the beach; won a prize in the county art fair and was hung in the West Palm Beach Airport.
Q. What’s a tool—creative or otherwise—you can’t live without?
A pencil sharpener. I ain't got no time for a dull pencil.
Q. What's a creative pursuit you'd love to try but haven't yet?
Improv comedy or stand up.
Q. What's your favorite way to spend a Saturday morning?
In summer, walking the farmer's market. In winter, making some nice breakfast.
Q. What's your favorite life lesson or piece of advice?
Know enough about cultures to ask questions to people in those cultures. This helps to carry a conversation and seem interesting.
Q. Where do you go when you need inspiration?
To the far remote reaches of the...museum. Art. I go see art.
Q. Why do you choose to be part of the Creative Mornings Columbus community?
Because I needed to grow my roots in Columbus more and meet people.
Q. Tell us about a meaningful connection you’ve made through Creative Mornings?
There are too many to count but I've been to my first sound bath that another member put on. That's some dope s#!+.
Q. How has Creative Mornings inspired you to think differently about something?
Start and just keep going. The only way is through.
Q. How has being part of the community shaped you and your creativity?
Creative Mornings has gotten me off my ass and started making art again. Getting out of the house to do things.
Q. Anything else you want to share with the Creative Mornings Columbus community?
No. I've said too much. (Ahahahahah)
