Alex Triske
Whatâs your day job?
Currently, I am a student at IU School of Informatics for Programming and WebDevelopment. I had previously spent three years at Herron School of Art & Design studying Visual Communications. I love typography and design, and *aspire* to become a Front-End Web Developer upon my graduation in May 2017.
Whatâs your favorite breakfast food?
My favorite breakfast food is without a doubt the quiche at Taste CafĂ© &Marketplace in Broadripple. I order the bacon cheddar quiche with a salad on the side. Itâs very light, fluffy and refreshing!
Whereâs a place youâd stop on a free afternoon in Indy?
On a free afternoon in Indy Iâm inclined to stop at Quills Coffee or Thirsty Scholar. This semester Iâve got a heavy load at school, so Iâm always looking for a quiet place to get some homework done in between classes. I enjoy the atmosphere and staff at both locations and encourage anyone who hasnât visited to try them out!
Whatâs one thing youâve been inspired by lately?
Lately one of the many things Iâve been inspired by are Henri Matisseâs The Cut Outs, and his minimal sketches (mostly portraits or figure) he created throughout his career. Emily Oberg, an editorial producer at Complex has also influenced me through her brand, Sporty and Rich. Obergâs aesthetic embodies her distinctly minimalist look, love for sneakers, and Instagram feed full of artfully curated selfies. She encourages her followers that âBeing Nice Is Cool,â and that being rich, doesnât mean literally, but in quality, happiness, and wellness.
In the spirit of Septemberâs theme Empathy, was there a time you really connected with a project or a person in the workplace?
A time I especially connected with Septemberâs theme was when someone expressed empathy toward me. In between studying, I work as a server at a restaurant in Geist. After a long night of errors, rude customers, complaints, and my boss yelling at me- I wanted to cry and quit. Our head chef could tell I was very upset, and took me aside to talk to me. He told me that people are rude and insensitive, and to not take it to heart, then hugged me after. I was so grateful that someone would take the time to console and relate to me. I value those moments and do my best to use those as momentum to help others.

Whatâs your day job?
Iâm a freelance illustrator and teaching artist.
Whatâs your favorite breakfast food?
I was born and raised in South East Asia, so anything with rice will pass as my favorite breakfast food!
Whereâs a place youâd stop on a free afternoon in Indy?
Calvin Fletcherâs. Itâs a great place to sketch, brainstorm or read. Plus, their coffee is really tasty!
Whatâs one thing youâve been inspired by lately?
The âAlice: 150 Years of Wonderlandâ exhibit at the Morgan Library and Museum on a recent trip to New York City. They had original manuscripts, illustrations and other artifacts from the âAliceâ universe that were on public display for the first time. As a childrenâs illustrator, one of the things I try to do is to think like a child, so seeing Lewis Carrollâs imagination through his work up-close was a real treat.
In the spirit of Augustâs theme Action, was there a project you worked on recently that you had to take immediate action on?
As a personal project, I recently started doing Art Drops, where I leave a piece of original artwork somewhere and then post the clue on my Instagram so people would know where to find it. Iâve left artwork in Indy, to as far north as Toronto, and the response has been overwhelming so far. The idea behind it was to make a habit out of of giving, and to do it freely and joyfully. As much as I believe in artists getting paid for what weâre worth, I also believe in making art accessible for everyone, and I felt an urgency in me to put that into action through my Art Drops.

Presently, I employ myself as a creative collaborator through Art Direction and Designâconsulting through advertising, branding, ideation, and UX/UI along with personal projects. Additionally, I pursue roles in education with a passionate engagement in process and divergent exploration.Â
Whatâs your favorite breakfast food?
Fruit smoothiesâthey are mad science in the morning.
Whereâs a place youâd stop on a free afternoon in Indy?
Iâm just happy if I can catch some sun on my face. Likely anywhere outdoors, but Iâll settle for obscenely large windows. Weâre talking ginormous. If thereâs a place where it is appropriate to curl up like a cat in a patch of sunâthatâs the place youâll find me in the afternoon.
Whatâs one thing youâve been inspired by lately?
Creative Mornings. I had heard about CM for months since returning to Indy, but had been too busy to attend or found out too late. Finally, a good friend was looking out and sent me a reminder of Sophie Faughtâs talk. I was instantly nervous with excitement and inspiration from start to finishârunning into fellow creatives, former students, waking up with iced coffee, delicious doughnuts, morningjazz, and a spirited, heartfelt presentation? Thatâs more than one thingâI failed this question.
In the spirit of Juneâs theme revolution, was there a time you created a personal revolution that ended up impacting your life greatly?
In the winter of 2012, I held a 30 day sale from my apartment. Posting photos to Instagram and Facebook, as well as inviting friends to visit and browse, I sold off nearly everything. Down to a backpack, a laptop, and a rucksack, I set out to travel with no clear end destination. After visiting good friends in various U.S. cities, I eventually found my way to Costa Rica. There I lived in a bamboo mansion on an organic farm among the foothills of Mt. Chirripo. While rewarding, the revolution was not the travel. It was in the dispossession from so many of my belongings and curated collections of things. The entirety of it was beyond liberating.
